Keowee, meaning "Place of the Mulberries," was visited by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto when he came through the area in 1540.
Lake Keowee is a 18,372 acre man-made lake operated by Duke Power Company. It is known for its mountainous surroundings. Public access is available through a variety of public boat ramps and Keowee-Toxaway State Park.
Lake Keowee is just downstream from Lake Jocassee, which sits just south of the North Carolina state line in the heart of the Palmetto state's beautiful mountain country.
