Sassafras Mountain is the highest point in South Carolina. From there you can see three states and view lakes Jocassee, Keowee and Hartwell. A new observation platform has been built with 360-degree views. There’s no higher place in SC to view fall foliage!
Natural Resources officials have installedl a 15-foot platform to compliment the work that has already been done. In the past few years the road and parking area leading to the 3,553-foot peak were improved.
To visit, drive 16 miles north from Pickens on U.S. 178 and 4.7 miles east on the F. Van Clayton Memorial Highway to a parking area. The summit is a 300-foot walk (and about 150 feet in elevation) from the parking area and is handicapped-accessible.
